Gastronomy

La Cruz de Huanacaxtle , located on the coast of Nayarit, is a charming fishing village that combines the tranquility of the sea with a vibrant culinary scene centered on the fruits of the ocean. Typical dishes:

  1. Pescado zarandeado: Red snapper marinated in a mixture of chilies and spices, grilled over mangrove branches, resulting in a smoky and spicy flavor characteristic of the region.

  2. Shrimp Ceviche: Fresh shrimp marinated in lemon juice with onion, tomato, cilantro, and chilies, served cold as a refreshing appetizer.

Some recommended places are La Peska, which specializes in fresh seafood and offers a variety of ceviches and fish prepared in the local style.

Columba: A seafood restaurant that has won over diners with its excellent cuisine at fair prices. Its dishes, ranging from fish salad tostadas to ray meatballs, stand out for their authenticity and flavor. La Cava de las Martínez: Known for its cozy atmosphere and traditional dishes, it is an ideal place to enjoy a relaxed dinner overlooking the sea.

Adventure

Here we recommend two unforgettable experiences. Embark on a maritime adventure to the Marietas Islands , a national park known for its biodiversity and hidden beaches. You'll also go whale and turtle watching. Alternatively, you can take surfing or fishing lessons, venturing into the daily activities of the locals and learning from experts. If you'd like more options outside of the water, there are mountain or hiking tours. Family outings are top-quality in a town like La Cruz.

Culture

La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, located in Banderas Bay, Nayarit, is a picturesque fishing village founded in the 1930s. Its name comes from a cross made of huanacaxtle wood found at the entrance to the town, a symbol of identity and tradition. One of the most significant festivities is the celebration of the Day of the Holy Cross on May 3rd. During this festival, fishermen decorate their boats and make a maritime pilgrimage in honor of the Holy Cross.

The event includes masses, processions, dances, and band music, reflecting the town's deep connection to the sea and its religious traditions. Additionally, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle celebrates the Day of the Dead with altars, decorations, and ceremonies honoring deceased loved ones, showcasing the community's cultural and spiritual richness. These festivities and traditions make La Cruz de Huanacaxtle a place where culture and history are intensely lived, offering visitors an authentic and enriching experience.
