Culture

Tapalpa , whose name comes from the Nahuatl Tlapálpan, meaning "land of colors," is a Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town) nestled in the Jalisco Mountains. During pre-Hispanic times, this region was inhabited by various indigenous groups who worshipped different deities. The Otomi culture once populated parts of these lands.

One of Tapalpa's most representative festivals is the Feast of the Virgin of the Defense, celebrated with great fervor. This festival takes place in the town of Juanacatlán, 11 kilometers from Tapalpa. The image of the Virgin of the Defense is venerated by the inhabitants, who participate in pilgrimages and religious ceremonies that reflect the community's devotion.

Another notable tradition is the "Flower War," celebrated during the national holidays in September. During this festival, the streets are decorated with flowers and wagon parades are held, reenacting a symbolic battle commemorating Mexico's independence.

During the second weekend of February, Tapalpa celebrates the Strawberry Festival , a festival that highlights local strawberry production. The event includes tastings, contests, and cultural activities that promote the region's agricultural identity.

As for dance, the Jarabe Tapatío is emblematic of Jalisco. This dance, known as the "Mexican hat dance," symbolizes courtship between a man and a woman and is performed in traditional costumes.
